Sheboygan County -Money Matters Down On the Farm

I shot interviews in Plymouth late last week and as part of the report, went to the Sheboygan County Fair. The agricultural agent who met me there described how the fair, with children and families showing their animals, was a highlight of the summer. When the fair closed after this weekend, harvest season work will begin in earnest on farms. Also, because conditions have been so trying on dairy farms with the price of milk being so low, the fair is a chance to forget milk checks and the bottom line if only for a few days.

Watch for our "Money Matters" report from Sheboygan County when In Wisconsin returns for an all news season Thursday's at 7:00 on Wisconsin Public Television. Our new season kicks-off on October 1st. The report will also be part of a larger project by PBS called "Patch Work Nation".

Money Matters: Down on the Farm

I'm heading to Sheboygan County this week with photographer, Bruce Johnson. We're going to talk with some dairy farmers who are working hard in the midst of low milk prices, high health care prices and the overall economic slump. These particular farmers milk 200 cows, which is an expanded operation for their 4th generation farm. They say they're fortunate because they also grow much of their feed, instead of having to buy it. They also say the Milk Income Loss Contract program is helping them through these times.

You can watch for our continuing Money Matters Series on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. on "In Wisconsin" starting in October.

Patchwork Nation Sheboygan Report

I wrote last week about the visit from Anna Shoup of the Online NewsHour. She stopped by Madison on her way to Sheboygan for a joint NewsHour/Christian Science Monitor project called Patchwork Nation.

Anna had a good visit to Sheboygan and met with a potential blogger for the project, a 15 year old public broadcasting fan who I found posting comments on Wisconin Public Radio's new online community discussion site.

You can read Anna's reporting from Sheboygan here. Wisconsin Public Televisin is looking at ways we can collaborate with the NewsHour on this project on-air and online, so stay tuned.
