Frequently Asked Questions

What is Friends of Wisconsin Public Television?

Created in 1969, Friends of Wisconsin Public Television is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization committed to enabling WPT’s mission and commitment to the people of Wisconsin through the building of a strong statewide membership base. The Friends of Wisconsin Public Television raise the funds necessary to pay for programs, broadcast equipment, staff and operating expenses.

Is my donation to Friends of Wisconsin Public Television tax-deductible?

Contributions to Wisconsin Public Television are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law, minus the fair market value of any thank-you gifts received. The fair market value of the gifts you received is listed on the acknowledgement letter you received at the time of your donation.

Does Wisconsin Public Television receive tax-payer support?

Yes. WPT receives approximately 31 percent of our annual budget from tax-payer support (see “Federal Funding” and “General Purpose | State Funding” on the graph). However, without the 53 percent of our budget that comes from individual supporters - the single largest source of revenue - we would not be able to continue operations to serve the people of Wisconsin.

How much money does WPT need to do business each year?

The total revenue goal for FY11 is about $11.3 million, of which $6.1 million is sought from viewers and individuals. To reach our viewer-contribution goal, we count on renewal gifts and additional gifts from our current members, donations from brand-new members and donations from rejoining members. Our methods for raising this money include on-air pledge drives, direct mail, email and web campaigns, and telemarketing.

Why does Wisconsin Public Television have so many fundraising drives?

In order to continue to provide the service of broadcasting the PBS and local programs that educate, inspire, reflect, and entertain Wisconsin, we rely on a variety of fundraising activities. One of the most effective of these activities is using our own broadcast air to encourage viewers to become members and to remind members to renew their support to help pay for the service we provide.

Traditionally Wisconsin Public Television has held four pledge drives during the year, in March, May, August and December.

How many supporters does Wisconsin Public Television have?

We currently have 49,000 active members. “Active” is defined as people who have made a financial contribution in the past 12 months.
